Huawei and cyber attacks
Shortly after the public confession of Google about the state orchestrated Cyber Attack it is time that European and Western Intelligence chiefs have warned China may have gained the capability to shut down many Nations by crippling its telecoms and utilities. Since the Chinese Telecom Giant Huawei gained access to Indian subcontinent and the Western Hemisphere, security experts started warning strategy makers of different countries to have laws enabled to curb this “opportunistic and monopolist growth.
Sources close to British Telecom cited that the risk of attacks to communication networks are high and the magnitude is unpredictable. Huawei’s nexus with the ruling dictatorial government and People’s Liberation Army enabling this giant to perform and execute multi billion contracts across the globe.
Vizhinjam International Container Terminal in Kerala & the BSNL 3G tender were rejected. The denial of clearance is seen as part of the Union Governments perception that the presence of companies with Chinese links will seriously compromise on Indian maritime and Intelligence Network security.
An attempt by Huawei to merge with the US Company 3Com was blocked on account of US national security interests. Many Top officials are already warned of possible hacking into their systems and stealing confidential information. The US Company Cisco, one of Huawei’s main rivals, sued the Chinese company for alleged theft of its intellectual property rights in 2003. The case was settled out of court.
Huawei, which in little more than 20 years has grown into one of the world’s most powerful companies, with projected sales this year of £21 billion. Last year its sales jumped 46%. Its tentacles have reached most of the world’s telecoms companies with an estimated 85,000 employees.
John Tindle, professor in telecommunications engineering at Sunderland University, said software or hardware could sit hidden in a network, waiting to be activated. “If unauthorized people were able to gain control of the equipment, its mode of operation could be changed,” he said. “The ability to move traffic across the network could be switched off. Traffic could be re-routed to another node controlled by the attacker.”
A Pentagon report last week cited Huawei as a key part of the cyber threat from China, noting that it retained “close ties” with the People’s Liberation Army (PLA). Huawei denies any continuing links to the PLA. A spokeswoman at the company’s UK headquarters dismissed the alleged links as “rumor and speculation”.
Outgoing National Security Advisor M K Narayanan has said the cyber attacks on computers in the Prime Minister's Office, including his own, last month had indeed been directed from China.
"People seem to be fairly sure it was the Chinese. It is difficult to find the exact source but this is the main suspicion. It seems well founded," said Narayanan in an interview with The Times of London. Two years ago, Chinese Trojan horse spyware was found in the offices of Angela Merkel, the German chancellor.

Google is investigating whether one or more of its employees in China helped launch the cyber attack against it last month. "We're not commenting on rumour and speculation. This is an ongoing investigation and we simply cannot comment on the details," a Google spokeswoman said.
